If you follow me on Facebook, or if you’ve been paying close attention to this blog, you might have heard me yammering on about the next project in the Redlisted series: a book that will fill in the space between the two timelines in Book One. (For those of you who haven’t read Book One, there is a timeline that takes place in 1992, and a timeline that takes place in 2010. Because reasons.) Continue reading
My awesome sister Emily Beaman recently founded The League of Extraordinary Bellydancers – a local troupe dedicated to presenting original geek-themed bellydance performances. Since I’m a total geek* and since Emily is the best choreographer around (don’t believe me? watch the video!) I obviously had to join in.
Behold our first choreography! It’s Game of Thrones themed, which, if you’re a fan, should be obvious from the musical selection. Be sure to check out Emily’s sweet Daenerys costume! I’ve actually never seen the show or read the books, but it didn’t matter to me because the choreography was so fun to learn and perform.
We’ll be performing this piece again at The Vaudevillain Revue presents 8-Bit Burlesque at Motorco in Durham this Saturday night. The show starts at 9pm, and you should totally come. My evil alterego is also making an appearance – you’ll have to show up to see what I mean.
*Geek CV: DND, WoD 1, WoD 2, MTG, Exalted & Eclipse Phase player, recovering anime cosplayer/fanartist, Avatard, recovering FFVII fanfic writer, Arkham Horror addict, spec fic writer and reader. For the most part I don’t really do TV or video games or comics (except snooty ‘graphic novels’), so I’m basically a geek hipster, i.e. the worst type of person that exists. I love and accept myself.
11.21.2013This Is My Jam: Bastion OST
“This Is My Jam” is a new feature about some of my favorite offbeat performance music. I’m hoping to make it a regular thing. I hope you enjoy it!
I’m an obsessive music hunter. I spend hours at a time on Soundcloud. I’ve made an ass of myself at multiple workshops by trying to sneak a peek at the instructor’s laptop or iPod. I listen to weird college radio in the hopes that they’ll play something I could theoretically dance to. I buy weird looking CDs at thrift stores all the time. So when cool music comes to me and I don’t have to work for it, I get really excited. Such was the case with the Bastion soundtrack. Continue reading
11.18.2013Swordplay for Bellydance Kickstarter!
Just a super quick announcement–my Swordplay for Bellydance DVD Kickstarter is now live! It’ll be up for the next 30 days. Pledge awards include awesome stuff like the DVD, private lessons and performance coaching! Please share this information with your network if you can–it’ll really help me out. Thanks for your interest and support!
11.17.2013Why Judgment is Awesome
I recently taught a series of workshops about performance skills. At the beginning of the series, I asked each of my students to write their biggest performance-related fear on an anonymous index card and give it to me. I then read the cards aloud to the group. Almost every single one of the responses I got looked like this:
I’m most afraid of being judged by other dancers.
I’m afraid that other people will judge my performances.
One card just said JUDGMENT. Just like that, in all caps.
Thrown off by the nearly unilateral response, and wanting to comfort my students, I said something trite about how judgment is inevitable, but you should go on with your bad self nevertheless and try not to worry about the people that don’t like you. Haters gonna hate, and all that. You’ll develop a thick skin with time. Just keep putting yourself out there. Continue reading
11.14.2013Dances With Pain
I was recently in a car accident. A woman in an SUV rear-ended my poor little hatchback economy car and gave me whiplash. It doesn’t sound like much when I say it, nor does it look like much when I write it down. Just whiplash, whatevs. But the result has been frustrating and stupid.
I’ve been living with Fibromyalgia syndrome for over fifteen years now and I consider myself a world-champion super star at pain management. I’m not a masochist, but I’ve taught myself how to re-code pain from exercise as this awesome thing I’m totally pumped about, like, aw man, lactic acid buildup, WOO! YOLO! Continue reading
11.12.2013A wild Kickstarter appeared!
I am in the planning stages of my next DVD project, which will focus on swordwork for bellydance. Sword is pretty much my specialty and something I love to teach, so if I can get the funding, I’ll be super excited to make this DVD.
Even though I have a computer to do the video editing, I still need funds to pay for space rental, photography, photo rights, and music licensing. I’ll be doing another Kickstarter to try to raise money, a draft version of which is now available online. If you’ve got a few minutes, please take a look and feel free to leave some feedback.
I’m hoping to have the project go live on the 15th (this Friday). Wish me luck!
Hey guys! Just a quick post to let you know that the sequel to Redlisted is now available on Amazon.com in your choice of format – paperback or digital. I’m so happy to finally be able to share this book with everyone, including readers who don’t do the Kindle thing. Yeah!
