The Feedback Machine
The next scheduled Feedback Machine session will be held on July 11, 2009, from 7 to 10PM in Carrboro, NC. Please email me at skbeaman at gmail dot com to ask for an application and to get information about the exact location of the event.

What is The Feedback Machine?
The Feedback Machine (FM) is an experimental, closed performance venue for dancers looking for immediate and direct feedback from their peers. FM provides a unique opportunity for performers to cultivate their own creative growth as well as that of their peers. FM participants will both receive and provide others with insight on how to grow as an artist and get the most out of each performance.

Who can participate in FM?
FM is designed for bellydancers of any style who have previous performance experience in one capacity or another- paid or unpaid, public or otherwise. Dancers do not need to identify themselves as "professionals" in order to participate in FM. All FM participants must be willing to sign and adhere to the Terms of Agreement provided as part of this application packet.

How are spots for each FM session allotted?
Spots are reserved on a first-applied-and-paid, first-reserved basis. You can pay for your spot in FM via Paypal to skbeaman@gmail.com. The participation fee is based on space rental costs and may vary. There are only 12 spots available for each session of FM. Once we are full we will start a waitlist.

How does it work?
Each FM participant prepares a 2-5 minute performance to share with the group. Dancers can opt to perform fully costumed or to just wear practice gear. During each participant's performance, all other participants will write down constructive feedback and comments they wish to share with the performer using a special form. Once each performer has finished her dance, the group will have 10 minutes to discuss the performance. The observers then give their feedback sheets to the performer and the process starts again with the next performer in the set. All observers must perform. All performers must give feedback. There will be no other audience members.

Why should I participate in FM?
You should participate in FM if the idea sounds compelling to you, if you think you can give others helpful and insightful growth-oriented feedback with respect and love, and if you relish the chance to accept the feedback of your peers with an open mind and heart. You should participate in FM if you think of yourself as someone who wants to contribute to the growth of a supportive artistic community.
You should not participate if you feel weird giving or receiving criticism, if you might feel jealous when another dancer gets "better" feedback than you, or if you will be angered or upset by receiving anything other than glowing praise. Examine your intentions before signing up. If anyone behaves inappropriately or otherwise violates the Terms of Agreement during a session, they will be ejected by the Moderator.

Does it work? We think so! If you're interested, please contact me at skbeaman at gmail dot com for an application.
