Private Lessons

Why take private lessons?
Private lessons are a way to study moves and techniques that are not taught in most normal bellydance classes, as well as to get more individual feedback about your technique and presentation. In a single private lesson, many students can either cover many more topics than they could in a class in the same length-- or, alternatively, they can go much deeper into a single topic than they ever could in a group class.
You might choose to take private lessons to prepare for a solo performance, to get help developing an appropriate home practice regimen, or simply to get in-depth feedback on how to improve your dancing.
You might also choose to take private lessons from me if you do not have a Tribal or Fusion teacher in your area and cannot attend my classes on a regular basis.

Who can benefit from private instruction?
I believe that experienced students benefit the most from private instruction. I am happy to work with anyone, but if you have taken a year or less of bellydance class, you would probably be better off staying in class until you feel very comfortable with the basics before delving into private lessons.
I do not require that you take my regular classes in order to be able to take private lessons, but if I have never seen you dance before, it would be helpful for me to spend one lesson doing an initial evaluation of your skills, goals and abilities. I am also happy to use videos as a tool for evaluation, although they are nowhere near as helpful as an in-person evaluation.
My evaluation process is optional, but it's strongly recommended. It's designed to help me structure your subsequent lessons so that you can get the most out of them.

Where can private lessons take place?
I can come to your house for your lesson, we can rent space, or you can come to my apartment. I am happy to travel anywhere in the Triangle (Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill and the surrounding towns) with no charge. Please ask if you are unsure whether or not your town qualifies. For more remote locations, I charge 50 cents per mile for travel. If you would prefer not to have the lesson at your house, we can look into renting space, or we can use my home "studio" in Carrboro. Please contact me for details.

How much do private lessons cost?
My starting rate is $35/hour, plus travel if applicable. I offer discounts for students who book more than one lesson at once- please contact me for details.

When are you available to teach private lessons?
Right now I am usually available on Wednesday nights, Friday nights, some Saturday nights, and any time on Sundays.

Troupe Lessons

Why take troupe lessons?
If your troupe is interested in getting input about a choreography you have created, learning skills for group improv, exploring theatricality and interaction between dancers, or learning about stage dynamics and how to make your formations and transitions more interesting, group lessons are a great idea. I am also happy to critique individual troupe members' technique and give each person suggestions for their own personal development.
I have several years of experience both working in troupes and advising other troupes. I specialize in developing group improv moves and combinations by adapting moves that are already a part of a troupe's movement vocabulary. I would love to help your troupe develop their own improv style, or work with your troupe on any other area where you need advice.

Where can troupe lessons take place?
I would prefer to come out and visit your troupe at practice, wherever that may be, for your troupe lesson. If this doesn't work for you, we can look into renting studio space. My home practice space is unfortunately not large enough for a troupe lesson. I charge a fee of 50 cents per mile for travel outside the Triangle area.

How much do troupe lessons cost?
My rate for troupe lessons is on a sliding scale based on how many people participate.
2 people: $30 per hour per person
3 people: $25 per hour per person
4-6 people: $20 per hour per person
7-9 people: $15 per hour per person
For 10 or more people (gosh, that would be a big troupe!) I would be happy to just charge $150/hour for everyone.
When are you available to teach troupe lessons?
Right now I am usually available on Wednesday nights, Friday nights, some Saturday nights, and any time on Sundays.

Party Lessons

I am available to teach lessons as part of private parties or events. I'd be happy to teach groups of children, adults, or mixed ages. Party lessons are great for birthdays, bachelorette parties, girls' nights out... pretty much any function, formal or informal.
You and your guests can learn basic moves, a short choreography, or the basics of group improv. Let me know what you want and I will try my best to make it happen.
Party lessons are priced using the same scale as troupe lessons, and the same provisions for travel apply.
Please contact me for details and scheduling if you are interested in hiring me to teach a lesson at your party or event.
(Note: Party lessons are more involved than the "mini-lessons" I offer as part of my private performance packages, but do not include a fully costumed performance.)
