Saturday, April 11 - Creating Your Practice: Conditioning for Bellydance Workshop
10AM - 1PM at Triangle Dance Studio, 2603 S. Miami Blvd, Durham, NC
No preregistration. $35 at the door (cash or check only, please) or 2 slots off of a Saturday 6-class Pass.
This workshop is appropriate for all dancers regardless of experience, fitness level or style.
The idea behind my Creating Your Practice series is to give dancers the tools they need to get the most out of their home practice- recognizing that we all have a limited amount of time to train but we'd still like to be the best dancers that we can be. The fact is, not all drills and exercises are created equal- some are wonderfully effective, some are benign but not very helpful, and some might even work against you or present an acute risk of injury.
In this workshop, in addition to learning specific training exercises, drills, and combinations, we will address the intricacies of conditioning for bellydance, including:
-how to understand your body to avoid injury and how to choose/modify movements to accommodate your body's specific needs
-how to maximize the impact of your workout through bellydance- specific functional training
-what kinds of muscle groups, muscular contractions, and muscle fibers are utilized by common "problem" moves and how to train effectively to overcome dance roadblocks
-how to multitask and use "real bellydance moves" in a conditioning context to get the most out of your practice time
My objective is to help each workshop participant put their workout in a greater context so that they can better understand how to exercise in a way that really helps them towards their dance goals.
This workshop is NOT just a "boot camp" style workout where the instructor beats you into the floor, but you WILL sweat. Please bring water, a yoga mat, blanket or towel, and wear workout-appropriate clothing.
Optional props to bring might include a yoga strap and/or an exercise ball.
Workshop participants will all recieve detailed handouts, but feel free to bring a notebook and pen or pencil to jot down your own notes.
Please feel free to send me an email ahead of time and let me know if there are any specific concerns you would like me to address during the workshop. You can reach me at skbeaman (at) gmail (dot) com!
